Retrofit & Efficiency Upgrades

An energy audit is effective if the retrofit recommendations are performed by a qualified company and verified by a third party.

Unlike companies that only perform the audit, Green Renewables can perform and/or manage the installation from start to finish.

A Quality Assurance check is performed during and at the conclusion of each and every job to ensure customer satisfaction.

For existing projects, Green Renewables can provide energy efficiency consulting, diagnostic testing, and third party verification.

Air Sealing

The thermal boundary separates the indoor environment from the outdoor environment to regulate the temperature and comfort of a home

Air that leaks through your home’s envelope via the outer walls, windows, doors, and other openings wastes a lot of energy and increases your utility costs.

Excessive leaks in the thermal boundary can cause the following effects:

  1. Significantly reduce the ability of insulation to keep desired heat in and undesired heat out
  2. Bring moisture and other pollutants into and out of the home via the attic or foundation, causing health and respiratory concerns
  3. Lower the durability of a home and potentially create costly repairs/renovations in the future.

A well-sealed thermal boundary, coupled with the correct amount of insulation, can make a real difference on your utility bills.

Insulation

Insulation in your home slows down the transfer of heat into or out of your home.

For your home to maintain the optimal comfort level, the heat lost during the winter must be replenished by heat from your heating system, and the heat gained in the summer must be removed by your cooling system.

As levels of insulation are improved, the costs associated with heating/cooling are significantly reduced.

The choice of insulation is abundant and largely depends on the specific application.

Green Renewables has experience with ALL types of insulation, including but not limited to:

  • Fiberglass, Cellulose, Injection foam
  • Closed- and Open-cell Spray Foam

Lighting / Water

Lighting typically accounts for 15-20% of residential energy use.

Switching from incandescents to LEDs or CFLs is simple, and can offer significant and immediate energy savings  on your electric utility bills.

The higher upfront costs for LEDs and CFLs is offset by the energy savings and a longer lifespan.

Benefits of LEDs/CFLs:

  • LEDs and CFLs on average consume only 20 – 25% of electricity compared to standard incandescent light bulbs.

  • LEDs have a lifespan of 50,000 hours, and CFLs have a lifespan of 8,000 to 12,000 hours, compared to incandescent bulbs which last only 2,000 hours.

  • CFLs and LEDs produce less heat, lowering cooling costs in the summer.

Switching to low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators will help reduce your water consumption and water heating cost.

Green Renewables specializes in lighting design for a wide variety of residential and multi-family applications. We work with the customer to find the ideal solution to lower lighting costs while meeting/exceeding customer needs.

HVAC / Water Heater

Replacing old, inefficient heating/cooling systems and water heaters can be one of the most expensive retrofit upgrades.

Before investing money in a new system, it is important to measure and quantify the efficiency of the existing unit to determine if replacement is necessary.

During the Combustion Appliance Zone testing, Green Renewables uses state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to test the safety and efficiency of your HVAC equipment. Often, our in-depth visual inspections alone will find problems that can be corrected with minimal upfront investment.

If replacement is warranted, Green Renewables will work with approved HVAC contractors to ensure proper unit sizing and customer comfort satisfaction.

Windows / Doors

Contrary to claims by many window companies, window replacement is rarely a cost-effective option to conserve energy unless the windows are very old, single-pane, and drafty.

Very high upfront costs and low-to-moderate energy savings results in lengthy payback periods of over 10 years, often greater than 20 years.

Before replacing windows, utilizing natural sunlight can alleviate many comfort issues in a home.

However, situations exist where window replacement is warranted and/or requested.

Green Renewables is not associated with any window manufacturers and offers independent, third-party guidance to help the homeowner manage expectations and make the most informed decision on their investment.

Duct Sealing

Your home’s duct system, a branching network of tubes in the walls, floor, and/or ceiling, carries the air from your home’s furnace and central air conditioner to rooms within your home.

Leaky ducts located in an unconditioned attic or crawl space can result in excess moisture and pollutants entering your home whenever the furnace or central air conditioner is operating.

Sealing your ducts to prevent leaks is especially important if the ducts are located in an unconditioned space such as an attic or crawl space, and can potentially save up to 30% of the energy costs associated with heating/cooling.

I give Green Renewables an A+ for professionalism, follow-through, ability to document (excellent report) and closing out the job in a timely manner with no loose ends.
